- Amaterasu (天照) is the sun goddess in Japanese mythology and one of the main deities of Shinto. She is considered the mythical ancestor of the Japanese imperial family and her full name, Amaterasu Ōmikami, means “the great kami (goddess) who shines in the sky.”
